Fun Fact:

One of the most well-known myths involving Thanatos is the story of Heracles and Alcestis. Alcestis was the wife of Admetus, king of Pherae in Thessaly. When Admetus was destined to die, the gods allowed his life to be spared if someone else volunteered to die in his place. Only Alcestis was willing to make that sacrifice. When Thanatos came to take her soul, Heracles—who happened to be visiting the household—learned of the queen’s noble decision. Moved by her courage and devotion, Heracles decided to intervene. In Euripides’ tragedy Alcestis, Heracles confronts and defeats Thanatos in a wrestling match, forcing the god of death to release the woman and give her life back.
