Did You Know:

The cult of Hades was quite unusual. Unlike Zeus, who had temples on every other hill and a throng of followers, Hades received little special attention. It wasn't that he was unpopular; rather, no one wanted to risk his displeasure. Offerings were made quietly, often in a cave or a hole in the ground, hoping to avoid offense. The principle was clear: if you wanted to negotiate with Hades, you best keep quiet.

Let’s not forget his unique companions. Most famously, there’s Cerberus, whose sole task was to prevent the living from entering and the dead from leaving. However, the underworld was also populated by entities with single heads. Hades, for instance, had the Furies (Erinyes) at his service, goddesses of vengeance who were more persistent than the most difficult tax collector. Meanwhile, Charon, the ferryman of souls, never moved without a fee. A coin for the crossing of Styx needed to be kept handy—preferably under the tongue. This was the advice given in Pausanias's "Description of Greece" from the 2nd century CE.
