Did you know?
Perhaps a lesser-known fact about Thanatos is how his symbolism found its way into modern philosophical and psychological thought. In the 20th century, Thanatos was revived by Sigmund Freud, who introduced the concept of the "death drive" (Thanatos) as a counterpart to "Eros," the life instinct. Freud’s theory proposed an inner drive within humans toward stillness, a return to an inorganic state — to nothingness. This concept had a major influence on how human nature was later interpreted and was further developed by thinkers such as Jacques Lacan and Herbert Marcuse. Freud's Thanatos came to represent the destructive forces within the human psyche and became a source of reflection on self-destruction, aggression, and war — all deeply thanatic in nature.
