Fun Fact:
Joachim Lelewel – a Polish historian, polyglot, as well as bibliographer and Slavicist – was once asked to identify the idol and concluded that it was a depiction of the Polabian god Svantevit.
Lelewel made two mistakes. First, he incorrectly interpreted the Latin name Svantevit as Światowid, supposedly meaning “the one who looks in four directions.” Second, although the Zbruch idol does indeed have four faces, modern scholars believe it does not represent Svantevit at all. So who are the four figures on the statue recovered from the Zbruch River? They may be deities from the Slavic pantheon—possibly Mokosh, Lada, Perun, and Dazhbog. Another theory suggests they represent four aspects of a single god: Perun.
