Fun Fact:
After the destruction of the temple in Radogoszcz (Rethra) in 1068, only one central sanctuary of the old faith remained untouched among the Western Slavs—Arkona. In 1168, the stronghold was besieged by Danish and Pomeranian forces under the banner of Valdemar I the Great and Bishop Absalon. The temple of Świętowit was protected by a permanent garrison of 300 warriors loyal to the high priest of the cult. But the invading forces were overwhelming. The stronghold surrendered on June 15 of that year, and the defenders were forcibly baptized. The temple and the statue of Świętowit were burned, and the children of the Rani tribe taken as hostages.
The god’s treasury—centuries of offerings from the faithful, essentially the national treasury of the Rani—was seized. This marked the end of the Rani people. Valdemar and Absalon systematically destroyed other pagan strongholds: Charenza, Gradziec, Ruygard, and finally, in 1170, Dievenow on the island of Wolin. The land of the Rani was taken over by Denmark, and new monasteries were quickly built on these territories, including in Bergen and Hilda.
