"Poles are part of the great family of Slavic peoples. The question about the beginnings of our nation must therefore be preceded by the question about the beginnings of the Slavs. Unfortunately, it is easy to pose, but immensely difficult to answer.

The origins of the Polish nation and state, like all of Slavic civilization, are shrouded in the mists of history. Armed with the experiences of many generations of researchers, let us try to lift at least a corner of this mystery…

Where did the Slavic peoples come from? Did they always occupy their historical, well-documented territories since early medieval times? Or did they arrive from other areas? Yet, another question remains: when? Can we capture in time and space the process of forming Slavic identities, and then attempt to trace later migrations and displacements of Slavic peoples? Where were their original settlements, the homeland of the Slavs? And further question: should we consider from the very beginning the possibility of the existence of individual Slavic tribes (as in the historical period), or did the Proto-Slavs initially represent a single ethnicity, an undifferentiated mass from which individual Slavic peoples gradually emerged?"
