Excerpt from "From Proto-Slavs to Poles":
"Poles are part of the great family of Slavic peoples. Therefore, the question about the origins of our nation must be preceded by the question about the beginnings of the Slavs. Unfortunately, it is easy to pose, but extremely difficult to answer.
The origins of the Polish nation and state, just like those of all Slavs, are lost in the mists of history. Armed with the experiences of many generations of researchers, let us try to unveil at least a glimpse of the mystery…
Where did the Slavic peoples come from? Did they always occupy their historical territories, well documented since the early Middle Ages? Or did they arrive from other areas? However, this raises the question: when? Can we capture in time and space the process of the formation of the Slavs, and then attempt to trace the later migrations and shifts of the Slavic peoples? Where were their original settlements, the ancestral homeland of the Slavs? And a further question: should we consider the possibility of the existence of individual Slavic nations from the very beginning (as in the historical period), or were the Proto-Slavs originally a single people, an ethnic mass that was not yet differentiated, from which distinct Slavic nations gradually emerged?"
