What is the book about? Before conventional medicines, it was believed that demons and the devil were responsible for diseases and ailments. Witchcraft could also inflict ailments through curses. This led to superstitions, rituals, prayers, and exorcisms aimed at warding off evil forces. Henryk Biegeleisen intertwines Slavic demonology with Christian beliefs, mythology, and ancient traditions passed down through generations, revealing practices used in folk healing. He explains spells, prayers, and rituals, emphasizing the belief in the power of words—even seemingly meaningless ones like "Abracadabra". Why was jaundice treated with yellow objects, and why was dog fur applied to bite wounds? Why was it believed that eating calf lungs would heal lung diseases? Did the most disgusting potions truly repel illness? Folk healing of the Polish people attempts to answer many such questions.
