Excerpt "From the Proto-Slavs to the Poles":
"Poles are part of the great family of Slavic peoples. The question about the beginnings of our nation must thus be preceded by a question about the origins of the Slavs. Unfortunately, it is easy to raise, but extremely difficult to answer.
The beginnings of the Polish nation and state, like those of all Slavs, are shrouded in the mists of history. Armed with the experience of many generations of researchers, let us try to unveil at least a corner of the mystery…
Where did the Slavic peoples come from? Did they always occupy their historical territories, well-documented since the early Middle Ages? Or did they arrive from other areas? The question remains: when? Can we capture the process of the formation of the Slavs in time and space, and then attempt to trace their later migrations and displacements? Where were their original settlements, the homeland of the Slavs? And another question: do we need to consider the possibility of the existence of distinct Slavic peoples from the very beginning (as in historical times), or did the Proto-Slavs initially constitute a single people, an ethnic mass still undifferentiated, from which particular Slavic peoples gradually emerged?"
