The goddesses known as the Erinyes served as guardians of the underworld, where under the command of Hades and Persephone, they oversaw the eternal punishments dealt to condemned souls. Their presence was inseparable from the darkest aspects of justice—relentless and eternal.
In some traditions, the Erinyes were identified with other personifications of vengeance and punishment. They were closely related to deities such as the Poenae (retribution), the Arae (curses), the Praxidikai (executors of justice), and the Maniae (madness). These functions often overlapped, creating a multifaceted image of goddesses who embodied both terror and cosmic order.
