"Poles are part of the great family of Slavic peoples. The question about the origins of our nation must therefore be preceded by a question about the origins of the Slavs. Unfortunately, it is easy to ask but extremely difficult to answer.

The beginnings of the Polish nation and state, just like the whole Slavic world, are lost in the mists of time. Armed with the experience of many generations of researchers, let us try to lift at least a corner of the veil…

Where did the Slavic peoples come from? Have they always lived in their historically documented homelands since the early Middle Ages? Or did they arrive from other territories? If so, then when? Can we trace in time and space the process of the Slavic world's formation, and then attempt to follow their later migrations and relocations? Where were their original homelands, the Slavic motherland? And further: should we assume the early existence of separate Slavic peoples (as in historical times), or did the Proto-Slavs originally form one people, an undifferentiated ethnic mass, from which distinct Slavic nations gradually emerged?"
