Excerpt from "From Ancient Slavs to Poles":
"Poles are part of the great family of Slavic peoples. The question about the beginnings of our nation must therefore be preceded by the question about the beginnings of the Slavs. Unfortunately, it is easy to ask, but extremely difficult to answer.
The beginnings of the Polish nation and state, like that of all Slavic cultures, are lost in the mists of history. Armed with the experiences of many generations of researchers, let us try to unveil at least a glimpse of the mystery…
Where did the Slavic peoples come from? Have they always occupied their historical, well-documented seats since the early Middle Ages? Or did they migrate from other areas? This raises the question: when? Is it possible to capture in time and space the process of the formation of the Slavs and then trace the later migrations and displacements of Slavic peoples? Where were their original settlements, the primordial homeland of the Slavs? And further: should we consider from the very beginning the possibility of existence of individual Slavic tribes (as in historical periods), or did the Proto-Slavs initially represent a single, yet undifferentiated ethnic mass from which individual Slavic peoples gradually emerged?"
