We actually got to know “Szewczyk Dratewka” only in the 1960s thanks to Janina Porazińska, who wrote a fairy tale based on folk legends with that title. From this story, we learn that the szewczyk (a diminutive form of the shoemaker) is a poor cobbler wandering the world. The young man had a good heart and helped everyone in need, including ants and ducks. Interestingly, in Janina Porazińska's tale, Szewczyk Dratewka does not encounter any dragon, let alone feed it a sheep stuffed with fiery sulfur. Skuba, the craftsman who freed Krakow from the monster, is a different shoemaker, who isn't necessarily of equally good heart. 

There’s another issue here. The young man named Skuba, who was a city shoemaker rather than a wandering shoe repairer, lived in Krakow and it was he who showed the king how to use a sheep's skin stuffed with sulfur to throw under the lair of the monster. The problem is that we know this version exactly since 1597, thanks to Joachim Bielski, who published a work in Krakow titled “Kronika polska Marcina Bielskiego nowo przez Ioach. Bielskiego syna iego wydana [...]”. 

In other words, Skuba, who comes from the folk, became the defender of Krakow only by the end of the 16th century.

In our version, Szewczyk can be known as both Dratewka and Skuba. But one thing is certain: he is a psychopath.
