Did you know?
In the 16th century, the devil was seen as a symbol of infernal power—one that only heavenly forces could overcome. This sparked a wave of literature focusing on the struggle between good and evil. One such work was written by Mikołaj Rej, a Polish writer and theologian. In 1570, he published a remarkable piece titled “Postępek prawa czartowskiego przeciwko narodowi ludzkiemu, opisujący proces nieba z piekłem” (The Devil’s Legal Action Against Humankind, Describing the Trial Between Heaven and Hell).
In this work, Rej explores the origins of the devil’s envy toward humanity and offers guidance on how to see through the deceptions of evil forces. Drawing inspiration from the medieval Processus Sathanae plays, Rej portrays Satan bringing lawsuits against Adam and Christ before the Divine Court. He also presents the struggles of the first humans against demonic powers, creating a compact demonological treatise compiled from various popular texts of the time on magic and sorcery.
While the central theme is a cosmic trial between heaven and hell, one of the most fascinating aspects of Postępek… is its list of Polish demon names—both male and female.
Among them:
Bierka, Bież, Czeczot, Czerniec, Dyngus, Dymek, Kiczka, Kozyra, Muchawiec, Pożar, Ruszaj, Rozbój, Rozwot, Smolisz, Węsad
And the demonesses: Chorzyca, Jędza, Wenda, and Ossoria.
Ossoria, with her eerie and distinctive name, stands as a symbol of Slavic folklore's unique take on the infernal.
