Interesting fact:
Our Polish mermaids haven’t always looked as lovely as the one on the Warsaw monument. Just take a look at the old representation of a mermaid in the long-ago Warsaw coat of arms, which depicted a winged beast with the legs of a bull and the tail of a lion, well-armed. The current coat of arms of Warsaw, featuring a shapely mermaid holding a sword and shield, is relatively new, having appeared a little over 80 years ago. Between us, there are loads of mermaids in Polish lands, and one of my favorites is Zielenica – the beautiful daughter of the Baltic, whose story is intertwined with the ruins of a Gothic church in Trzęsacz.
