Fun Fact:

Persephone, also known by the name Kore, meaning "maiden," was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Her story is told in several preserved sources, the oldest and most important being the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (7th–6th century BCE).

From this poem, we learn that Persephone was abducted by Hades while picking flowers in the valley of Nysa. Interestingly, this seemingly familiar name refers not to any specific Polish landscape, but to a place in Boeotia or southern Thessaly—central Greece. Some interpret Nysa symbolically. After the abduction, Demeter, goddess of the harvest and Persephone’s mother, was overcome with grief, causing the halt of all vegetation on Earth.

In the Hymn to Demeter, we read that for nine days Demeter wandered the earth, neither eating nor drinking, carrying torches in her hands—an image echoed in the Eleusinian Mysteries, where women would reenact her mournful search.
