Did you know:
Popiel was a cruel, unjust, and corrupt ruler seated in Kruszwica. As it turned out, he was the last of the Popielid dynasty. After the death of his first wife, he married a German princess who was beautiful but had a cold heart and craved power. Together, they ruled over the lands around Lake Gopło with an iron fist.
Everyone was well aware of their crimes, but people feared Popiel's mercenaries and his cruel, vengeful nature for a long time. But then things became even more horrifying. Popiel and his wife decided to poison the entire council of tribal leaders and elders gathered at Popiel's castle at his invitation, as well as to murder Popiel's sons from his first marriage. The plan succeeded, and after all the deaths, the ruler refused to burn the victims' bodies according to Slavic customs. Instead, they were thrown into the deep waters of Lake Gopło.
Popiel's crimes offended the Slavic gods and violated the most respected Slavic laws, customs, and principles. Eventually, the wrath of the gods, the spilled royal blood, and the curse cast by the victims just before their deaths led to extraordinary events, perceived by the people as the anger of the gods.
In this design, we showcase the moment of the greatest crime committed by Popiel. Here is his Feast.
