In 1493, while sailing past the island he would name Hispaniola (now Haiti), Christopher Columbus reported seeing strange creatures in the water. In his journal, he described witnessing three mermaids rising from the sea. Modern historians believe he likely saw manatees, but could Columbus really have mistaken “sea cows” for mythical sirens?

Yet you don’t have to look far to find mermaid legends. In France, there’s the well-known tale of Melusine, who transformed into a mermaid—but only on Saturdays. The British tell of Morveren, a mermaid who fell in love and married a mortal man. In Basque mythology, there’s the lamia, a river-dwelling siren with duck-like feet. Interestingly, the lamia was said to be helpful—if a farmer left food for her by the riverbank, she might secretly do his work overnight.

Closer to home, our German neighbors believe in Lorelei, a woman betrayed by her husband. In her grief, she threw herself from a cliff into the sea and became a mermaid. To this day, it’s said her haunting song still lures lonely sailors to their doom.

From distant oceans to European rivers and lakes, the legend of the syrenka endures—seductive, sorrowful, and timeless.
