Fun Fact:

Jarilo was the son of the highest Slavic thunder god, Perun—specifically, his long-lost tenth son, born on the last night of February during the celebration of the pagan New Year (what we now call Easter). But on that very night, Jarilo was abducted and taken to the underworld, where he was adopted and raised by Veles, Perun’s rival and the Slavic god of the underworld.

The Slavs believed that the realm of the dead was an eternally green land of spring, filled with dewy, grassy plains. There, Jarilo grew up tending the herds of his adoptive father.

In ancient Slavic mythical geography, the land of the dead was believed to lie beyond the sea, where migrating birds would fly each winter. With the arrival of spring, Jarilo returned from the underworld, bringing renewal and fertility to the land. The spring festival of Jarilo, which survived in folk traditions, was held in celebration of his return.
