Hypnos was the father of dreams—literally. From his union with the goddess of night were born the Oneiroi, the personifications of dreams. The most famous of them is Morpheus, who inspired not only Renaissance painters but also modern pop culture creators. It is Morpheus who appears in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman as the embodiment of dream and imagination, and as Neo’s guide in The Matrix, on the threshold between awakening and dream. But Hypnos was their father, the one who opened the door to the realm of sleep—sometimes filled with beauty, other times with nightmares.
