The banshee is often linked to the so-called “keeners” — women who, in ancient times, would wail and sing mournful laments at funerals. Sometimes paid in alcohol for their sorrowful songs, according to one legend, they were cursed for accepting this form of payment and transformed into banshees. Thus was born the myth of their passage to the other side, becoming ghostly omens of death.
The scream of a banshee is said to echo between the world of the living and the dead — filled with anguish and unfathomable sorrow. Some describe it as a paralyzing shriek; others say it is a song so hauntingly beautiful and mournful that it seems to carry the pain of generations long gone. Sometimes, only the person marked for death can hear her wail; other times, it’s a warning to the family. In the darkest versions of the legend, the banshee may even haunt her victims, driving them to madness and suicidal despair.
