The Dullahan roamed Irish villages as a harbinger of death. In many tales, he came for the souls of those whose time had come. Once the headless rider spoke someone’s name aloud, there was no escape—their soul would inevitably leave the body.
However, some stories tell of rare escapes. In certain versions, people who carried gold with them were able to flee from the Dullahan’s deadly call. Not because they paid their way out of death, but because gold is said to be the one thing the Dullahan fears. This detail makes him an even more mysterious and eerie figure in Celtic folklore.
