    Did you know?

The earliest mentions of werewolves appear in some of the oldest surviving literary works. Some claim the very first reference comes from the Epic of Gilgamesh, written over 2000 years BCE. In it, a woman turns her former lover into a wolf. However, since turning into a wolf doesn’t necessarily make someone a “werewolf,” many scholars consider ancient Greece to be the true birthplace of the myth.

In the 5th century BCE, the historian Herodotus described a nomadic tribe called the Neuri, who allegedly transformed into wolves for several days each year.

The most striking legend, however, is that of King Lycaon of Arcadia. When Zeus visited him, Lycaon tested the god's omniscience by serving him roasted human flesh—his own son’s. Furious, Zeus turned Lycaon into a werewolf and resurrected the boy.

The Roman poet Ovid described this transformation vividly:
“He tried to speak, but his voice turned into the howl of a wolf,” and
“His garments became a shaggy coat, his arms turned into legs.”

Versions of this myth vary, but all point to one disturbing historical truth: human sacrifice did occur in Arcadia. Eating human innards was believed to ward off disasters—especially attacks by wolves. Twisted? Absolutely.
