Fun Fact:

Zorza is also the wife of Perun, the Slavic god of thunder. In this role, she veils her face with a long veil and rides into battle alongside her husband. When Zorza lowers the veil, she can protect her favored warriors. Interestingly, in Serbian tales, Zorza is not the wife of Perun, but of the Moon (Myesyats).

What other tasks did Zorza have to fulfill? One story tells of two or three sisters guarding a deity—sometimes unnamed, sometimes depicted as a dog or bear, and occasionally referred to as Simargl. Whatever its form, the deity is chained to the North Star (Polaris) in the constellation Ursa Minor and longs to… devour the entire night sky. If it breaks free, the end of the world will come. Scholars of ancient myths believe Simargl was borrowed from the Byzantine Simurgh.

Another interesting fact is the triple aspect of Zorza. Researchers note that Zorza is an example of a common mythological motif: the phenomenon of three sisters. These three beings, usually women, represent aspects of time—past, present, and future—or stages of age and life itself.

Examples of triple sisters can be found in many legends. Greek mythology includes the three Gorgons and the three Harpies. Both the Hittites and the Greeks had versions of the Fates, mirrored by the Roman Parcae. Irish stories speak of the Morrigan, and British tales include triple forms of Guinevere, Brigid, or the goddess Coventina. Perhaps the triple-formed Zorza is another borrowing, or a variant of a much older deity—or even the same deity adapted to its time.
