Fun Fact:

In stories closer to our times, where the topielica has been associated with a devilish lineage, there are mentions of an unusual version of this creature, specifically a pitch-black horse wrapped in chains, which occasionally emerges from the depths of rivers and lakes, clanking rusty metal. This too was a topielica or topielec.

Of course, rural folks protected themselves from the topielica as best they could. An effective list of remedies against these beings included various symbols of faith in the One Lord. The topielec can be immobilized by casting a rosary, a scapular, or a stole (a type of sash that symbolizes priestly dignity) onto it, as well as using blessed herbs. This last method was widely used to protect homes, inhabitants, and entire premises from misfortune and the wiles of evil forces.

Jan Świętek, author of the renowned monograph “Lud nadrabski” and an outstanding amateur ethnographer, noted a very interesting collection of advice on how to deal with topielec. Świętek wrote: "When you notice where the topielec drowns the most people, you should conclude that there is its palace. Therefore, a small vessel should be sent in that direction, containing a cross with the Lord Jesus and a lit candle. The vessel, upon reaching the place where the topielec resides, will stop and spin around. At that moment, a brave man arms himself with a scapular, a rosary, a pot of holy water, and other holy items, puts on tight thick trousers, rolls them up to the knees, firmly ties a sheet around his midsection to prevent the topielec from grabbing him by his private parts, and ties a rope around his waist, the other end of which is held by people on the shore. When this man catches the topielec, he signals with an old repaired bell that he also has with him. At this signal, the people on the shore pull the man and the topielec ashore, throw the scapular and rosary around the latter's neck, and sprinkle him with holy water. Having immobilized the topielec in this way, they then chain him and lead him to the church. Here, after untying the ropes from the large bells, they ring them until the enemy of humanity promises to leave the Rabka River for the specified number of years."

Remember, first throw the cross, or possibly sprinkle the topielica with holy water. Then the chain, and drag the demonic maiden to the church. There, they will take care of her. It’s as certain as amen in prayer.
