    Fun Fact:

Rod separated light from darkness, truth from lies, good from evil, and the heavens from the seas, placing the earth in between. He created the world and celestial bodies from his own body: the sun is his face, the stars are his eyes, night is his thoughts, the winds are his breath, rain and snow are his tears, and thunder is his voice. He invented everything on earth and in the sky, and then created other gods to maintain order in his newly established three realms: the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. He also planted the seeds of the World Tree, a gigantic oak whose roots grow from the underworld—the realm of the dead—whose trunk passes through the earth—the realm of the living—and whose crown holds up the sky and the celestial realm.

After the act of creation, Rod, in a rather Nietzschean fashion, withdrew—yet continued to exist indirectly in all of his creation, leaving the management of the world’s affairs to the other gods who emerged from him. This is why there are no official records of Rod in the traditional Slavic pantheons. He did not manifest as a traditional god, but instead exists as an inherent part of the world itself.

Depictions of Rod are uncertain, but he was most likely imagined as an old man surrounded by the Rodzanice. He was offered gifts of honey, bread, and cheese. These offerings were also made to the goddesses of fate who accompanied him. Scholars of ancient myths attribute many roles and qualities to Rod, though they rarely agree. Perhaps these many functions—as guardian of the family line, god of fertility, and guide to the afterlife (Vyraj)—are not contradictions, but clues pointing to the original form of Rod, from which so many meanings and newer gods later evolved. Could it be that Rod stands at the very dawn of time?
