Forget the fact that he once hanged himself, stabbed himself, and endured the torture of hunger to discover and understand the runes. Perhaps an even better example of Odin's extreme thirst for knowledge—and the reason for his one-eyed appearance—was his journey to Mimir's well.

Those who managed to drink from the well gained knowledge of everything. So, Odin once traveled to Mimir and asked for a sip. Mimir agreed to give him a little to drink, but required Odin’s eye as payment. The highest of the Norse gods not only agreed to this payment but even gouged out his own eye.
