According to the medieval chronicler Gallus Anonymus, Popiel had two sons who were about to undergo the Slavic rite of passage known as *postrzyżyny* (first haircut).
Right before the ceremony, two mysterious travelers arrived at the stronghold asking for shelter — but Popiel rudely turned them away.
The weary strangers wandered on, until a peasant named Piast welcomed them into his home, offering food and rest.
The guests ended up taking part in the postrzyżyny of Piast’s son, Siemowit — who would later become the ruler that overthrew Popiel.
Stripped of his crown, power, and wealth, Popiel fled with his wife to a wooden tower on an island.
And there... the mice got him.
