Did you know?
Why the name "Liczyrzepa" (literally: Turnip-Counter)?
According to legend, the Spirit of the Mountains fell in love with a beautiful Silesian princess and took her to his mountain castle. But the young woman didn’t return his affection. To cheer her up, he gave her magical turnips that could transform into her family members and servants.
Cleverly, she saw an opportunity. She asked the Spirit to count all the turnips in the Karkonosze Mountains. While he was distracted counting, she took the finest one, turned it into a winged horse, and escaped.
What did the heartbroken spirit do? He destroyed his castle in despair and has lived under the open sky ever since. And so he earned the slightly mocking nickname Liczyrzepa – the one who counts turnips.
Depending on the version of the tale, the princess was called Emma or Dobrogniewa, but all stories end the same way: the girl escapes, and the Mountain Spirit gains his iconic name. It may not be a happy ending — but you have to admit, it’s a rather charming one.
