One of the most brutal historical examples of wrath leading to a massacre involves Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart (1157–1199). During the Third Crusade in 1191, after capturing Acre, the English king agreed to release 2,700 Muslim prisoners in exchange for ransom and sacred relics. However, Saladin—Richard’s opponent—delayed the finalization of the agreement. Frustrated and enraged, Richard ordered the execution of all the prisoners outside the city walls. Every last one of them. It became one of the bloodiest massacres of the Crusade era.
