As the legend of the Wild Hunt circulated through many corners of Europe, countless variations of the story are known. The Scandinavian versions differ from the German, English, or French ones. In Norse mythology, the Wild Hunt was only heard, never seen. Moreover, its arrival was preceded by a deafening silence, followed by the barking of Odin's dogs.  

In Scandinavia, this phenomenon, which came with the winter storm, was referred to as Oskoreia (actually Åsgårdsreia), meaning the Terrifying Ride or Odensjakt, which meant Odin's Hunt. According to legend, the appearance of the Wild Hunt was associated with the outbreak of war or changes in the seasons, while the ghostly hunters represented the spirits of the dead, although they could also be Valkyries and other magical beings.
